Rauschenberg made great contributions to American printmaking. He produced over 800 published editions during his career. He was fascinated by popular culture and with using everyday materials such as family photographs, street litter, magazine cut-outs, receipts to create his collages. By 1954, Rauschenberg completed his first three-dimensional collage paintings—he called them Combines—in which he incorporated discarded materials and mundane objects to explore the intersection of art and life.
Rauschenberg helped invent new printmaking techniques such as one that combined lithography with silkscreen, to create his collage-like prints.
