Collection: Reid Stowe

William Reid Stowe (b. 1952-) is an American artist and mariner. Stowe grew up around sailboats on the East Coast, sailing on the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. In 2010  Stowe made history for having been at sea for 1,152 days, the longest nonstop ocean voyage in recorded history. Many of his paintings were inspired by that voyage and he often uses parts of the sails or other odds and ends from his sailing experience to create his mixed media paintings.

Stowe, is a natural born mystic, whose long voyage at sea, seems to have been an extended religious transcendental experience-and what came out of it are paintings that are quite intriguing.

According to art critic Donald Kuspit, "Stowe's works are not classifiable in any certain way. They seem to live in a borderline, exploring between the psychotic and the transcendental, spiritual experience... The works definitely come out of what the psychoanalyst Romain Roland referred to in 1927 as, coincidentally, the 'Oceanic Feeling.'

They are densely layered and as a body overlap with so many modern concepts in painting...Then we discover they are the cumulative effect of spiritual experiences — from harrowing to sublime — upon the oceans. At the core of our understanding we come to discover an artist intuitively embracing an inner dialogue between his unconscious-spiritual-psychological life inseparable from his life on the oceans."
