Hunt Slonem (b.1951 - )
Saint Rosa of Lima, 1984
Oil on canvas
84 x 72 inches

Framed Dimensions: 86 x 74 x 2.75 inches

Hunt Slonem's paintings are at once vibrant, energetic and colorful, yet also deeply spiritual and contemplative. The artist creates exotic forms with expressive and highly textural brushstrokes that are full of intense color, loosely inspired by artists of the German Expressionism movement such as Ernst Ludwig and Emil Nolde.

He has painted various mystics such as Saint Rose of Lima Saint Francis of Assisi because he thinks of them as mysterious beings with the benign power to restore the peaceable kingdom- to live unhurt among animals which is a traditional sign of sacredness. His Saints are able to survive in the jungle for they are as innocent and vital and direct as any of its creatures.  Slonem‘s hope is that animals and human beings will live in peace together.

Slonem’s portraits are tempestuous and often feverishly painted and seem to be the very embodiment of the charismatic power of his holy beatific personages and the charged energy of the animal and plant lives that cohabitate in their exotic locales.

He has spent time with many spiritual masters and has a daily meditation practice. In this work, Slonem creates a kind of private chapel, conveying his objective faith in St. Rose of Lima and his subjective faith in others – the strangers who encounter his paintings. His hope is to make us an instant Mystic.
