Xavier Esqueda was born in Mexico City in 1943. Esqueda is known for his figurative and surrealist paintings and sculptures filled with anthropological elements that recall the native religiosity of Mexico and idiosyncrasy of past and present Mexico.

Esqueda's paintings reflect the influences of Salvador Dali and the American movements Op and Pop Art. He is one of the first Mexican artists that began to experience the "object art".

His paintings often depict a reality that only appears in the dream world. He is a surrealist painter whose works often feature trompe d'oeil
